If you read my last post, you know there were a ton of new vendors this year at the Great Homeschool Convention. I went to the convention last-minute and am so glad I did! If you didn’t make it to the GHC and are wondering what you missed, here are a few of my favorite finds! I picked these products because some of the curriculum/supplemental material I used this last year just did not work for me. I was looking for more than the standard workbook curriculum, Bible studies, and played out games that we own.
1 .Fitivities: Let’s face it, there’s not too much out there in terms of fun physical education games. Most of us get our P. E. in by going out or turning on the Wii, but what if you can’t get out and don’t want your kids on the TV all day? That’s where Fitivities comes in. To be honest, I think I might use it more than the kids, that’s how fun it looks! You spin the arrow and land your gym shoe on the correlating spot and complete the exercise. First around the board wins. It kind of reminds me of a game that could be on the Wii, but without your kids staring mindlessly into a television. I love this game and thought it was so unique and actually motivating to get the kids moving!
2. BlackbirdandCo: I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of writing curriculums pretending to be literature rich, and only using excerpts in their workbooks. This is not literature! Give me literature or give me death! Luckily, I don’t have to die because Blackbird and Co designed their curriculum around actual literature. (Real living books) Something all homeschoolers want!
3. Preborn Prodigy: When I was pregnant with my children I always played music on my belly in hopes of creating geniuses. (If you ask me I’d say it worked, but I could be biased.) Instead of music with no purpose these CD’s play soothing music, with prayers, blessings, and messages of the Lord. It’s never too early to introduce Jesus to our babies, and Preborn Prodigy are coming out with fun math CD’s as well. I thought this was cute and a fun way to start educating our children before they are even out of the womb.
4. Key to the Front Door: If there is one thing I didn’t learn growing up, it was how to manage my finances. This is something I had to struggle to learn as an adult, which is not exactly the best time to be learning about finances. I want my own kids to learn early about finances and this game can make it super fun! As soon as I saw their vendor table I basically did a back flip, in my mind of course.
5. Barr None Publishers Music Pack: This past year we spent money on music lessons for both our older kids. In the end, we weren’t too happy with the results. I felt like my kids jumped into songs too soon without really understanding what they were doing. This could be because I’m their mom and stink at music or it could be because the teacher rushed them. Either way, I want to start doing music at home with them to save money, and it needs to be simple. When Jim showed me how simple it was to start playing with his books, I was sold. Not to mention they sell books for almost any instrument.
